How does PFV licencing work?

There are two methods of licencing PFV. What are the differences between them?

You can use PFV without a licence. However, with no licence, it is not possible to check your captured data against a rules file (e.g. validate your device against a particular PTP profile).

If you want to be able to use the rule-checking feature, then you must have a licence. The two licensing methods are:

  • The instrument that captures the PTP or ToD data has a PFV licence installed:

Any PC can be used to run PFV and analyse the captured data

  • The PC used to analyse the captured data has a PFV licence installed:

The licenced PC can analyse the captured data from any instrument.

In addition, with a PC-based licence, PFV can be used to analyse PTP messages in a .pcap file.
