How does PFV licencing work?

There are two methods of licencing PFV. What are the differences between them?

You can use PFV without a licence. However, with no licence, it is not possible to check your captured data against a rules file (e.g. validate your device against a particular PTP profile).

If you want to be able to use the rule-checking feature, then you must have a licence. The two licensing methods are:

  • The instrument that captures the PTP or ToD data has a PFV licence installed:

Any PC can be used to run PFV and analyse the captured data.

Instrument licences must be purchased for Paragon products but are included as standard in Sentinel (for versions 9.1.1 and later)

  • The PC used to analyse the captured data has a PFV licence installed:

The licenced PC can analyse the captured data from any instrument.

In addition, with a PC-based licence, PFV can be used to analyse PTP messages in a .pcap file.
