How accurate is the SNE?

The timing precision is 10 microseconds (0.01ms).

How much delay can be added?

The emulator can add from 0.01ms to 4secs of latency on 25G and 10G interfaces. The max delay is 4secs TOTAL. A bi-directional link is 2sec max in each direction

Do you support Layer1 impairments (e.g. BER, Symbol errors)?

The Emulator supports BER but not Symbol Errors.

How many module slots are available?

There are 4 slots in the chassis. Network cards are fitted at the factory and are not user-swappable.

How many ports per module are there?

100GbE: 2 ports per module.

25GbE: 2 ports per module.

10GbE: 2 ports per module.

1GbE: 4 ports per module.

Can I have a mixture of 1GbE, 10GbE, 25GbE and 100GbE modules in the same chassis?

Yes.

I have a 1GbE fibre connection. How can I get the 10GbE ports to auto negotiate to these speeds?

The 25GbE and 10GbE ports do not auto-negotiate and when the SNE is powered on both sets of modules will run at their highest rated speed.  To force a re-negotiation you can right-click on a network start or end point and select Reset all Ports (version 7 software or earlier) or select the ports from the Dashboard and click Reset Ports (versions later than v7).

Does the SNE support Ethernet fragmentation?

Yes.

Does the SNE have its own background traffic generator?

Yes. You can generate either UDP (using the Background Traffic Generator) or TCP packets (using the TCP Server Generator).

Does the SNE have a visual GUI?

Yes, this is a key value of the SNE. The GUI displays a graphical visual network which makes it very easy to build complex networks. From version 11.x of the SNE firmware onwards, the user interface is accessed from a standard web browser (this interface is referred to as the "Web UI"). 

Does SNE support duplicating?

Yes, we support duplicating of packets. You can either duplicate packets using a dedicated Duplicator tool (specifying 1:1, 1:X or 1:X with a delay between duplicates) or you can simply draw two links from an Input Port to duplicate the traffic from that port. This could be used to achieve a similar effect to port mirroring, if desired.

Does SNE support ToS filtering?

Yes, ToS filtering is supported - we support DSCP in a dedicated filter, but can provide any ToS filtering through a generic filter.

Can you delay a particular class of traffic? Example: Delay only TCP traffic with particular destination or delay VoIP Traffic

Yes, filters can be used to identify any type of data. Once a filter has "passed" or "failed" a certain type of traffic, you are free to apply any type of impairment to that stream.

Does SNE support delaying Audio from Video? Example: Delay only Audio from Video traffic

Delaying audio from video depends on the structure of the AV stream. There are likely to be two ways the AV stream is encoded:

  1. "Out of Band" audio - The audio is transmitted as separate stream of packets beside the video. In this case a filter can be easily used to identify the audio packets and delay them.

  2. Single stream but separate packet type - The audio is transmitted with the video, but flags on the packet allow the emulator to identify video vs audio frames. This allows a generic filter to be built to "pass" packets that are marked as audio.
