For PAM4 interfaces or SyncE Jitter testing, specific modules MUST be used. These modules have been tested by Calnex to ensure they fulfil the requirements for functionality and performance needed to enable correct operation and guarantee the integrity of the timing measurements. Use of other modules may result in a failed test or incorrect result.

For SyncE Wander and PTP on non-PAM4 interfaces, most modules should work correctly; known exceptions are detailed below. If you have a module that is not recognised, please let us know.

PAM4

Release 7 introduces 400G and 50G PAM4 optical interfaces. To achieve optimal timing performance with this release, specific optical modules as listed below MUST be used:

SyncE Jitter

The modules listed below are those that MUST be used for SyncE jitter testing. These modules have been tested by Calnex to ensure that clock recovery can be bypassed and that they have sufficient bandwidth to allow the jitter performance of the device to be tested accurately. These modules are also known to operate correctly for PTP and SyncE Wander.

For SyncE wander and PTP at 1G and 10G we expect all correctly configured modules to operate correctly. At other line rates we expect most correctly configured modules to operate correctly.

What does "correctly configured" mean?

Paragon-neo reads information from the module when it is inserted. Paragon-neo expects the modules to conform to the relevant specification (SFF) for that module type. If the module does not conform to the specification (for a number of specific fields), then the module will not be considered usable.

Some modules with the same part number are programmed differently. This means that it is difficult to state definitively whether any given module will work or not.

Known Exceptions

High Power Modules

Some high power modules appear to have their transmitters disabled by default. To enable the transmitter, it is necessary to write to specific register locations in the module. If you are using a high power module and the module is recognised by Paragon but you cannot establish a link when connected from Paragon port 1 to port 2, please raise a ticket in the Calnex Service Desk (if you have valid CSS) or contact support@calnexsol.com.

These modules can be used with Paragon - enabling the transmitters is performed using a separate utility.

Other

  • Hirose, LTD1302-BH: Module does not support multi-byte read. Supported by Paragon-neo version 01.00 and later

  • FS, SFP28-25GSR-85: Some of these modules are configured in a way that Paragon-neo does not recognise; others appear to be OK

  • Finisar, FTLX1472M3BCL: These modules support a range of rates from 8.5Gb/s to 11.3Gb/s for Fibre Channel, SDH/SONET and 10GbE. When the CDR is disabled (which Paragon will do under certain circumstances), the module will set the CDR for 8.5Gb/s Fibre Channel and so no link will be able to be established.
